Aim: To Prepare, Evaluate and Submit Simple Ointment Base
Requirements:
- Chemicals: Wool Fat, Cetostearyl Alcohol, Hard Paraffin, Yellow or White Soft Paraffin
- Apparatus: Beaker, Measuring Cylinder, Evaporating Dish, Water Bath
Theory:
Simple ointment (without medicament) can be used as emollient. Oily type of bases provides more penetration power. To increase the consistency, hard paraffin is included in the formulation. Simple ointment which is composed of cetostearyl alcohol, wool fat, yellow or white paraffin and hard paraffin is used as ointment base.
Formula:
Procedure:
1)Accurately weigh all the ingredients.
2)Add hard paraffin and cetostearyl alcohol in evaporating dish.
3) Melt above mixture on water bath.
4)Then add wool fat and white soft paraffin into the previous mixture.
5)Stir until all the ingredients are melted and form homogeneous mixture. 6) Remove from the water bath and cool.
7) Transfer it into a suitable container and label.

Storage: It should be stored in tightly closed and completely filled containers.
Precautions:
O hypersensitivity to any of the component, then stop the use of ointment.
O Avoid contamination during use.

Emollient: Emollients are the substances having the quality of softening or soothing the skin. These are also used for moisturizing treatments. It can apply directly to the skin to soothe and hydrate it. They cover the skin with a protective film to trap in moisture. Emollients are often used to help manage dry, itchy or scaly skin conditions such as eczema, psoriasis and ichthyosis.
Emulsifying agents: Emulsifying agents are the third substance or agent which produce the film at the interface between two immiscible liquids and stabilized the system, those agents are called emulsifying agent or emulsifier or emulgent.
Ointment base: The ointment base is a substance or a part of ointment which serves as carrier or vehicle for the mendicament.
