Non Staining Iodine ointment

Formula for Non Staining-Iodine ointment:

Iodine was taken in a glass mortar, powdered completely.

Arachis oil was added and triturated.

Mixture was transferred to a vial, PVC liner was added rubber closure was added and the vial was crimped using aluminum cap.

Vial was placed on water bath for 1 hour and shaken occasionally.

After reaction was completed, contents of the vial was transferred to a beaker.

The required quantity of yellow soft paraffin (by calculation) was mixed with iodised oil and congealed.


Iodine due to staining has poor consumer acceptability. When Iodine is combined with Arachis oil it binds at the double bond present in the free fatty acids i.e. oleic acid and linoleic acid to form a non staining product

Methyl salicylate was triturated with given weight of non- staining iodine ointment at room temperature.

Apply with friction on intact skin. Replace cap tightly after use.

Storage    : 

Keep away from light. Store in cool and dry place


Before reaction:-

1. Wt of vial+ rubber cap+ PVC+ aluminum cap = ‘A’ gm   =

After reaction:-

2. Wt of Iodised oil+ vial = ‘B’gm =

3. Wt of Iodised oil = B-A = ‘C’ gm =

4. Wt of empty beaker = ‘D’gm =

Transfer iodised oil to beaker 

5. Wt of beaker+ iodised oil = ‘E’gm  =

6. Wt of Iodised oil = E-D= ‘F’ gm =

∴ Wt of Iodine = F×1gm /C = ‘G’ gm =

50 g of   I2 = 1000 g of ointment

‘G’ gm of Iodine = _______ gm of ointment

Ointment wt = Wt of yellow soft paraffin +Wt of iodized oil

Wt of yellow soft paraffin = Ointment wt – wt of iodised oil after transfer
