Procedure:

1. Iron wire was taken in small pieces in a conical flask. To it half the quantity of phosphoric acid and 25 ml of water was added and heated on a water bath till the iron dissolved. 

2. Calcium carbonate, potassium carbonate &sodium phosphate was triturated with remaining phosphoric acid and 80 ml purified water. The solution of iron prepared in first step was mixed with this slurry .The mixture was filtered.

3.Cocineal was boiled with 375 ml of water for 15 min, sucrose was added and again boiled for 15 min, solution was cooled, strained using a muslin cloth.

4. Colored syrup was combined with Iron and calcium solution obtained in stages 1and 2. Then orange flower water was added and volume adjusted with purified water

Storage:

Store in a cool and dry place in an air tight container

Theory:

Fe + 2H3 PO4  Fe (H2 PO4 )2     +H2       

Heating on water bath is recommended to minimize volatilization of water. If the reaction mixture becomes dry then a solid block is formed which will not dissolve when water is added

CaCO2 +   2H3 PO4           Ca (H2 PO4 )2  + CO2   +     H2O      

 KHCO3 + H3 PO4               K H2 PO4     + CO2   +     H2O      

Na2 HPO4 + H3 PO4             2Na H 2PO4

Excess phosphoric acid added to ferrous acid phosphate solution and to all salts completes the reaction. The mixture must be filtered to remove iron carbide and carbon derived from iron solution
