Blood is a vital fluid that circulates throughout the human body and serves many important functions. It is composed of several different types of cells and plasma, a liquid portion that contains various substances. Here are the major components and functions of blood:

  1. Red Blood Cells (Erythrocytes): These are the most numerous cells in the blood and contain a protein called hemoglobin, which helps to transport oxygen from the lungs to the body’s tissues. They also help to remove carbon dioxide from the body.
  2. White Blood Cells (Leukocytes): These cells are part of the body’s immune system and help to defend against infections and diseases.
  3. Platelets (Thrombocytes): These are small, cell-like fragments that are involved in blood clotting and help to stop bleeding when an injury occurs.
  4. Plasma: This is the liquid portion of blood that contains water, proteins, hormones, and other substances. It helps to transport nutrients, waste products, and other substances throughout the body.

The functions of blood include:

  1. Transport: Blood carries oxygen, nutrients, hormones, and waste products to and from the body’s tissues and organs.
  2. Protection: White blood cells and antibodies in the blood help to defend against infections and diseases.
  3. Regulation: Blood helps to regulate body temperature, pH balance, and electrolyte balance.
  4. Clotting: Platelets in the blood help to form clots that prevent excessive bleeding when an injury occurs.
